Using PCB Outline, Stackup and Rules as Project Inputs

A practical starting point for the outline, stackup and design constraints that need to be aligned before fabrication work.

Confirm the manufacturing boundary first

KiCad Board Setup groups physical stackup with rules for tracks and vias. At project start, outline, layer count, material constraints and installation space should be aligned as one input set.

Information to organise

  • Outline, mounting points, keepouts and height limits
  • Stackup, copper-layer purpose and impedance-related constraints
  • Source of track, clearance, via and copper-pour rules

Handoff suggestion

Bind the mechanical drawing, board rules and current PCB revision together, then record every outline or stackup change in one change list.
