Solution focus

Part numbers, packages and substitution relationships should be marked separately so they are not mixed during version handoff.

Engineering basis

IPC-2581 treats the BOM and approved-vendor information as part of manufacturing description data. A project package should distinguish part number, package, key parameters and substitution boundary rather than retain only a part name.

Design focus

  • Organise the BOM by reference, part number, package and quantity
  • Mark critical parts, compatibility conditions and non-substitutable constraints
  • State the preconditions, verification owner and revision impact for alternatives
Grouped components and circuit board pad layout

Recommended information

  • Part number, brand and package
  • Confirmed and open material items
  • Allowed and prohibited substitutions

Handoff and verification

  • Versioned BOM
  • Critical-part and substitution-boundary table
  • Approved-vendor or procurement-source notes

Next collaboration step

After the information for bom and alternative-part information is confirmed, align the functional, interface, material, assembly and revision information before the next solution discussion.
